About Harold E. Alexander Wildlife Management Area

Harold E. Alexander Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses roughly 6,700 acres of forested land and wetlands located near the Tar River in eastern North Carolina. This wildlife management area is managed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, designed primarily to conserve habitats for game and non-game species and provide public hunting opportunities. The terrain is a mix of pine and hardwood forests, bottomland hardwood swamps, and open fields which support a healthy population of deer, turkey, waterfowl, and small game. Its location near the Tar-Pamlico River basin contributes to a rich ecological network that supports amphibians and migratory birds, making it a valuable wildlife refuge. Visitors to the area frequently engage in regulated hunting as well as birdwatching and hiking along informal trails throughout the property. The WMA is especially popular during the fall and winter seasons for waterfowl hunting. Its accessible proximity to nearby towns makes it an appealing destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking quiet, natural surroundings away from crowded parks. The management area does not have developed facilities like campgrounds but offers several parking areas for day use and access points for fishing along the Tar River. Conservation efforts in the area emphasize habitat improvement projects including controlled burns and selective timber harvests to maintain healthy forest succession and wildlife diversity. The wildlife management area preserves a portion of eastern North Carolina’s native ecosystems providing critical habitat connectivity amidst growing regional development.
